Evaluation and Estimate
To assess the vehicle, we have developed a spreadsheet that guides us through the many features of a tractor. From this spreadsheet, we can compare the results to previous tractor restoration jobs to provide an ESTIMATE of what it will cost to restore the tractor. The evaluation process includes steam cleaning the tractor and then testing the horsepower with one of our dynamometers. Not only does this help us to identify potential issues with the engine, it often exposes other leaks or mechanical issues with the tractor. We also drive the tractor in each gear, test the brakes, hydraulics, and make sure the steering operates properly.
Once the estimate has been completed, we share that information with the customer. We prefer to have a meeting in person, but can also do this over the phone or even email. As part of that conversation, the estimate can be modified per the customer’s needs. We do always tell people that we don’t want to sacrifice our reputation by cutting corners on a project. However, there is always “wiggle room” within that.
Sometimes we encounter "surprises" as we are working on a tractor. When this happens, we write “change orders” to share that information with the customer. We contact the customer and let them know of the problem and what we recommend to fix it along with the cost to do so. Upon approval, it is added to the project scope.
